Knitting for a cause
Some of our residents here at Barton Lodge have been busy with their knitting needles, creating blankets and toys to support Lymington Cat and Kitten Rescue. The idea began a couple of years ago during a chat about much-loved pets from their childhoods. Many residents fondly remembered the cats who had kept them company over the years, both as children and later in life. A few had even adopted cats from the rescue centre themselves.
The group wanted projects that were simple to make, leaving plenty of time for conversation, laughter and tea breaks. Over the past two years, they’ve knitted around 100 blankets to keep the rescue cats’ cosy, along with more than 150 toys ranging from hearts and cupcakes to Christmas decorations and gnomes. The blankets are used at the rescue centre, while the smaller items are sold in the charity shop to raise vital funds.
About the rescue centre
Established over 40 years ago, Lymington Cat & Kitten Rescue was founded to care for strays, unwanted cats and kittens, and even feral cats when space allows. The charity rehomes as many as possible and relies entirely on donations and fundraising to continue its vital work, helping hundreds of cats find loving homes each year.
A visit to the Lymington shop
Recently, Jean and Alison visited the Lymington Cat and Kitten Rescue shop on Lymington High Street, in the New Forest to deliver the latest batch of knitted donations. The shop is stocked with high-quality clothing, shoes, jewellery, books, DVDs and more.
Jean and Alison were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff and impressed by the care and attention that goes into running the shop – a reflection of the dedication behind the charity itself. The team works hard to keep the shelves looking lovely, creating a welcoming and well-organised space that helps raise vital funds for the cats in their care.
