VE Day 70th Anniversary

On 8th May 2015, Barton Lodge and Woodley Grange celebrated Victory in Europe (VE) day to mark its 70th anniversary.

Barton Lodge decorated the Home with flags and balloons and organised a VE Day, Street Party themed event that involved residents, staff, family members and friends.

Our Activities Organiser dressed up as a Captain and several family members dressed up as Land Ladies. The residents were all dressed in their ‘glad rags’.

There was music and dancing featuring an accordion player and our very own Maintenance Manager playing the guitar. Residents sang their hearts out with familiar songs such as Keep Smiling, Land of Hope and Gory and Pack Up Your Troubles.

Some residents wrote on little flags posted around the Home, their messages and memories of loved ones they had lost in the war and spoke of their recollections.

The restaurant area was adorned with union flags and napkins and tables were arranged as if to mimic the street parties that were held 70 years ago.

It was a wonderful day and a fitting way to remember the accomplishments of the brave soldiers who fought in the war.
